<redacted> says, "How do I get the Queen to fly me to the
top of
the Mountain?"
[Note: Thanks to the amazing Oneiroi who swooped in.]
So just yesterday I made a novice to check the experience
someone who was trying to be an Illuminati would face. When you just read
CGHELP scrolls you’re less likely to catch things then when you actually follow
the scrolls and refuse to do anything but follow what the scrolls say.
So I ran into this problem in the tutorial: What I think happened
was that I was on autopilot and just greeting her before I handed the crystal ball to the ant queen. At this point the quest got flaky and I was finally able
to get the quest to work by greeting ant253.
Greet queen didn’t seem to work. I’m assuming the QUEEN and
ANT are acting up.
A day later I see this:
14) 2015/02/23
04:29:47 - <redacted>: "How do I get the Queen to fly me to the top
of the Mountain?"
15) 2015/02/23 04:32:42 - Steingrim: "Greet her, and
then you'll have the option of handing her the
crystal ball."
Figuring it might be the same thing I tried to talk them through
it. We tried everything I could think of, including him going back and killing another
hog and getting another crystal ball. Nothing worked, not even me rolling up a
newbie, doing the quest myself and having him follow.
I don’t know how to say this other than this tutorial is hell.
I say that because you can’t even die to get out of it. You’re just stuck.
At the very least is seems the quest needs something like
repeatable stages.
Stage 1: Before you enter Newton
Stage 2: Newton before you enter Lolliprin.
Stage 3: Before you get to Smoke Mountain.
Stage 4: Before you leave Smoke Mountain to kill the shadow.
Then implement something like TUTORIAL REBOOT and let new
players be able to reset the stage they’re on.
I get this isn’t minor undertaking and someone is going to
have to track and rollback data exactly right or risk blowing up the code.
But here is why it is important this get fixed. Turns out
this was a newbie to Lusternia:
10) <redacted>: "Thanks for your help!"
11) <redacted>: "Ok, no problem. Is this type of
thing common?"
12) <redacted>: "// Yea. Ok, I figured this was
around for a while so was surprised it was buggy. I'll take your word for
it!"
13) <redacted>:
14) <redacted>: "// I played Imperian several years ago, as
a Predator. Was pretty fun, and my dnd group
recently broke up, so I needed a rp fix."
They were tired by the time they left the portal and then
logged. Hopefully, they’ll give us another shot and we just didn’t lose another
person over the tutorial.
Lastly, the Oneiroi was/were awesome, but it is a bit
troubling that it still took a while for them to track down the problem. I don’t
mean that as a slight to the Oneiroi, but it did seem the tools they had
available to them were lacking in some way or another.
