Alright, I remember that when I was a newbie I was first awed, then delighted, then disappointed, frustrated and finally pissed off at the Lusternian clothing system, because of how unintuitive and how irritating it can be. I would buy two pieces of clothing that I thought I could wear, then realize I could only wear one, and I could never find out exactly why, beyond that it was just something about the layers and bodyparts they were worn on. I've never found a detailed help scroll anywhere, player made or otherwise, that resolved the mystery for me, and I eventually gave up on it, just buying combat essentials and leaving it behind me. I recently became a trademaster, and finally have access to the patterns command, so I decided to sit down and document exactly how layering works. I think I've got everything figured out with my testing, but just as a disclaimer, it's possible I may have missed out stuff or gotten things wrong anyway. I'm here to share what I've found out, and I hope it'll be useful for those people (especially newbies) who want to properly plan out their wardrobe.
============================================================
First, some facts about tailoring.
- Tailoring has 51 different "patterns" (listed below).
- Tailoring uses the Lusternian bodypart system. This diagram shows all the possible bodyparts. Other tradeskills use this system too - for example: tattoos. This allows them to do some nifty stuff, like making it so that if you wear clothing on a bodypart that also has a tattoo, the tattoo will be hidden etc. Note that there is no clothing that uses the fingers and wrist bodyparts.

- Clothing can be worn on four different layers.
- - UNDERWEAR
- - NORMAL
- - OVERWEAR
- - ACCESSORY
- You cannot wear/remove a clothing from a layer if you're wearing something in a layer that covers it.
- Underwear goes below normal which goes below overwear. Accessory layer is seperate and can be worn/removed at any time regardless of everything else.
- Curio items don't interfere with any of the layering, and you can wear as many curios as you want.
- ACCESSORY slots are unlimited - you can wear as many belts, packs, pouches, stoles or whatever else as you want. (Note: I only tested up to 5, not sure if there actually is a limit at 10 etc)
- OVERWEAR NECK has TWO slots. Ie. you can wear 2 cloaks, or 2 capes or 2 scarves, or 1 cape and 1 cloak, or 1 scarf and 1 cloak etc etc. There is no clothing that uses normal/underwear neck layer.
- All other bodyparts have 1 slot per layer. If two pieces of clothing have conflicting bodyparts, they cannot be worn together. For example, a bodice (UNDERWEAR - chest, waist) cannot be worn with a corset (UNDERWEAR - chest, gut) because they both use the chest bodypart.

... and then never did it.
I really wish that they would. There are things like coat / cloak / tabard that I can wear, but I have to do it in exactly the right order, and when I do it I can't rub my bracelet for the enchantment on it. Oh, and then I have to take them off in the right order too in order to get at that bracelet.

I am currently wearing:
dancing cowhide boots, Boots of the Wanderer, the Boots of Astral Jumping, the Pearl Sandals of Vernal Haste, and a pair of Winged Sandals of Haste.
I just imagine them as being Faeling sized, and I am wearing one pair per toe.
Also, jewelry layers work in a way I haven't figured out yet - I'm not a jeweller so I'm not going to find out anytime soon either. I used to think gloves blocked rubbing rings, but I tried that and that wasn't the case. I think they might have changed that some time ago, maybe?
Mind you, there was a set I ran into that was at the OVERWEAR layer, I think. So your garter belt is showing over your robes, for instance.... not exactly stylish.

All piercings (of any type) go in one of the special piercing slots. They are:
left eyebrow
right eyebrow
left nostril
right nostril
septum
upper lip
lower lip
tongue
labret
5 left ear slots
5 right ear slots
left nipple
right nipple
navel
which are covered (ie hides the piercings and prevents wearing/removing them) by the tailoring slots as follows:
FACE covers both eyebrows, both nostrils, septum, both lips, all ears, tongue and labret.
CHEST covers both nipples.
GUT covers the navel.
This happens regardless of layer - underwear covers just as well as normal or overwear. It also leads to weirdness like a mask covering up your earrings, slips not covering nipple piercings, and bodices showing off your navel.
However, piercings are subject to a long-standing bug: If the inventory order (as shown on II) of an article of clothing is higher than that of the jewelry you're attempting to wear, then all piercings covered by that tailoring slot beyond the first are blocked with an improper "You find it difficult to put on <stud> while wearing <clothing>." message. This occurs even if the clothing item isn't worn and is just sitting in your inventory. Example: If your II screen looks like:
"stud1234" the first stud
"stud5678" the second stud
"mask9012" a silly mask
"stud3456" the third stud
"stud7890" the fourth stud
then WEAR 1234 LEFT EAR followed by WEAR 5678 RIGHT EAR wears the first stud, but gives an error for the second, and WEAR 3456 LEFT EAR followed by WEAR 7890 RIGHT EAR works correctly. A similar issue occurs with nipples and chest coverings. This can be 'fixed' by dropping all your studs and picking them back up again.
