About the only thing banks are useful for any more is preventing people from forcibly stealing your gold, and I haven't heard of that happening in years. They really stopped being important at all once you no longer dropped your gold on death.
Just remember, if you get in trouble, leave the room and close the door. He'll knock and wait politely for you to open the door again (please tell me he still does that...).
