About the only thing banks are useful for any more is preventing people from forcibly stealing your gold, and I haven't heard of that happening in years. They really stopped being important at all once you no longer dropped your gold on death.

That was basically how the old old intro went, the one everyone liked, and that got replaced. It took only a few minutes, was lore appropriate, taught you a few basics, and sent you on your way.
